Pre-1985 motorcycles get the same concours-level care as classic cars. No rubber or metal contact. Whether you're dealing with this situation for the first time or looking to be better prepared in the future, this article breaks down the key details that matter most.

1

Breakdown Recovery for Riders

A motorcycle breakdown on a DFW highway is significantly more dangerous than a car breakdown. Motorcycles are harder to see, have no protective shell, and cannot be simply pulled to a wider shoulder position. If you experience a breakdown on a major highway, get the bike to the rightmost lane edge, lean it on the sidestand if stable terrain allows, and move yourself as far from traffic as possible — ideally behind a guardrail.

Call NW Towing at 214-882-0100 immediately and give your exact location by highway, direction, and the nearest exit or mile marker. Stay visible by waving your helmet or a brightly colored jacket. Our motorcycle-equipped flatbeds are dispatched with the same priority as car calls, and our operators are familiar with single-person loading procedures that don't require a second person to stabilize the bike.

2

The Right Equipment for Motorcycle Transport

Towing a motorcycle is fundamentally different from towing a car, and requires purpose-built equipment. At NW Towing, our motorcycle-capable flatbeds are equipped with front wheel chocks that hold the bike upright without requiring a passenger to stabilize it, soft-loop tie-downs that attach to the frame rather than the handlebar or fork tubes, and ATV carpet runners across the entire load area to protect both the bike's finish and the truck deck.

The chock system is critical. A motorcycle secured only by straps without a wheel chock can shift laterally during cornering, gradually loosening strap tension until the bike tilts. Our front chocks lock the front wheel in a fixed upright position regardless of road dynamics, creating a stable triangle between chock and two rear strap points that eliminates lateral movement entirely.

3

Protecting Paint, Chrome, and Carbon

Motorcycles concentrate enormous value in their cosmetics. A single strap improperly routed across a painted fuel tank can leave a permanent pressure mark. Chrome that contacts a steel deck edge will scratch. Carbon fiber components crushed by an overtightened strap can delaminate. Our operators are trained to identify painted and finished surfaces before attaching any hardware.

Soft loops — short loops of webbing that wrap around the frame — are used as the strap attachment point instead of hooking directly onto chrome or painted components. We apply foam padding at any point where straps pass near finished surfaces. For show-quality bikes and concours restorations, we carry microfiber blankets to protect tank and fender surfaces during the entire transport.
